Lindsay Beane, DrPH, is a public health expert with over 30 years experience in needs assessment, human service program development, fundraising, and coalition building around issues of poverty, drugrecovery, and HIV/AIDS. She has founded non-profit agencies in Boston and Baltimore to foster the cultural arts, youth filmmaking, HIV prevention, and community revitalization, and has raised over $40M for health centers, social service agencies, and hospitals that serve the poor.

Dr. Beane’s current work focuses on a 25,000-resident African American community in northwest Baltimore, highlighting the link between longstanding official neglect and the resultant poverty, environmental degradation, health disparities, and compromised life expectancy. In 2010 and 2012, Dr. Beane visited Cuba to study the Cuban health system; she is currently partnering with a colleague from the Escuela Nacional de Salud Pública to compare the HIV service delivery models in Havana and Baltimore.

Jeffrey Boutwell, Ph.D, is a consultant on international security issues, having worked for the Pugwash Conferences on Science and International Affairs and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

While with the Pugwash Conferences, Jeffrey organized three international scientific workshops in Cuba, from 1998 to 2004, on public health and biotech issues. He is the author of The German Nuclear Dilemma and numerous articles and essays on a wide variety of issues, including Israeli-Palestinian relations, small arms and light weapons,
and nuclear weapons and US defense policy. His Ph.D. is in political science from M.I.T. and he worked as a staff aide for the national security council in the Carter administration. He visited Cuba a 4th time in Jan 2012 with the WFP/LAWG delegation
